Description

The Black Boy Fly book was written for everyone with a dream larger than life itself. Throughout my life, I dreamt of taking flight toward my dreams, yet faced many obstacles and challenges that kept me on the ground. I want everyone that reads this book to know one thing, you were born to fly! Life is truly a journey, and with every battle you fight, you gain the strength you’ll need to soar amongst the stars.

The Black Boy Fly book and my writing were inspired by Richard Wright’s similarly titled novel, Black Boy, and the song, Black Boy Fly, from Kendrick Lamar’s debut album (Good Kid, M.A.A.D City). Literature and music have been constant forces in my life, and I often draw inspiration from both. The writings of Richard Wright have shaped my perspective on the struggle of African Americans before the Civil Rights Movement. Kendrick Lamar’s music, a dramatic blend of poetry and musicianship, provided me with various guides toward understanding the modern-day plight of African Americans.

Isaac Yao Addae, PhD is a first-generation Ghanaian-American, engineer, educator, entrepreneur, and investor. He is dedicated to applying his industry and academic insights to help individuals and organizations achieve their goals through fostering purpose-driven cultures embracing diversity, inclusion, and entrepreneurial thinking.

I live my life following three core values: purpose, influence, and change. This book has been organized as a collection of my thoughts on each of these core values, and sheds light on each through my life experiences. After reading my thoughts, I hope that you feel a deep sense of inspiration and an urgent desire to discover your own purpose. Sharing these thoughts in this way was not as easy as I first thought it would be. However, along my journey, many people encouraged me to share my story in order to benefit others. This book represents my attempt to do just that. I hope that what I’ve experienced resonates in some way and pushes you to fly toward your dreams.
