Why is money such a difficult thing to understand? My ability to understand and talk about money has grown tremendously, but it took a lot of growth for me. There are a lot of things about money that I had to learn the hard way, and poor money management is a generational curse that I’m focused on breaking. There are so many educated and intelligent people that have no clue about budgeting, saving, and investing. I know because I used to be one of those people. It doesn’t have to be this way because there are a plethora of resources out there. Despite all the information available, I think what holds us back is our culture around money.
While some communities are taught how to wield money as a powerful tool, I believe we (Black people) are taught to fear money. Don’t be afraid of money. Don’t be afraid to become proficient at budgeting, saving, and investing. You CAN do it. It doesn’t matter how much debt you have, or how much money you make. From what I’ve learned, being good with money starts with your mindset. There are books, tools, and people that can help you. Go get the information you need. INVEST money in these resources so you can become better with money. Don’t just SPEND all of your money enjoying life and then say you can’t AFFORD to INVEST in learning resources to improve your money mindset. There are tons of wealth advisors, financial planners, money coaches, etc. available to you. Go find the resources and get better with money so that future generations won’t have to struggle.
I’m thankful for everything I learned about money from Maurice Wilson early in my career. Over the past few years, my partner, Dr. Kisha, has taken my money mindset to the next level. Stop making excuses about why you’re not good with money. I used to say that all the time. You can be good with money, you just have to be willing to make the investment (double entendre).
