Whether you’re having fun, or not, time truly does fly! This week I wrapped up my 6th calendar year as an assistant professor in the Tennessee State University College of Business. This image is the first group of students I taught at TSU. To God be the glory! Much respect to my ΑΦΑ brother, Dr. Leon Prieto. I credit him with alerting me of the job opening at TSU. I must also thank my colleagues Drs. Glenda Glover, Millicent Lownes-Jackson, Retta Guy, and Festus Olorunniwo for believing in me enough to offer me the job, especially since I had yet to finish my Ph.D. This journey has taught me that what’s for you will be placed in your hands. You won’t have to go looking for it.
Since January 2015, I’ve done so many impactful things on campus and in the city of Nashville. It is really unbelievable to think about how much my life has changed over the years. I’ve taught over a thousand students in courses such as business strategy, entrepreneurship, and leadership. I’ve been on multiple search committees for new faculty roles. I’ve helped organize several campus visits with local high schools. I’ve participated in numerous departmental, college, and university initiatives. I’ve built amazing relationships with colleagues and former students. I could go on, and on, and on. I’ve truly enjoyed my life as a college professor. Most importantly, as an alumnus of TSU, I believe that I’ve been a great representative for TSU both on campus and in the community. The funny thing is, after all these years, I feel like I’m really just getting started in terms of building what my legacy will be when my time is us.
At the end of the day, I give all thanks to God. When I started my Ph.D. program at Morgan State University, my goal was to teach at Howard University and continue working as an engineer in some capacity. Coming back to Nashville wasn’t in my plans. Always remember, there are your plans, and then there are God’s plans. Focus on understanding God’s plans and your life will unfold in ways you could’ve never imagined. Trust me on this one. Can’t wait to see what God has planned in the future. I’m gonna stay in my lane and continue to be His humble servant. Stay tuned… #BlackBoyFly
